Zulfikar Ramzan SM '99, PhD ‘01
CTO
- RSA
I have been working in the area of cybersecurity (in a variety of capacities) for much of my career. I’ve had the chance to work on cryptography, malicious software (malware), phishing / online fraud, web application security, network security, and mobile security, among other areas. I’m currently CTO at RSA. Previously, I’ve served as CTO of Elastica (acquired by Blue Coat), Chief Scientist of Sourcefire (acquired by Cisco), and Chief Scientist of Immunet (acquired by Sourcefire). I’ve also had amazing experiences with Symantec, DoCoMo USA Labs, and Bell Labs. Each role has afforded me remarkable opportunities to work on innovative ideas geared towards helping mitigate the risks we face when our information goes online.
On the side, I have been a guest “faculty” for Khan Academy, a remarkable (and, most importantly, free!) resource for online learning — check out the series on Bitcoin that I did for them.
Aside from technical/engineering work, I really enjoy opportunities to help raise awareness of cybersecurity issues for both broad and technical audiences. I’ve written numerous papers and a couple of books. I’ve also spent a great deal of time speaking externally at conferences as well as talking to customers, analysts, the media, and also elected officials in government (members of the US Senate and House of Representatives, as well as state, local, and international elected officials). I’ve developed over 100 freely available chalk talk videos on cybersecurity (Search “Zulfikar Ramzan Chalk Talks” on YouTube).
