Yang Ruan SB '08
Senior ESG Data Engineer
- Truvalue Labs
Yang is an experienced data engineer and data scientist passionate about helping companies and investors act more responsibly through aggregating and collecting ESG data. She’s a senior ESG data engineer at Truvalue Labs, a FactSet company. Truvalue Labs creates datasets from news streams using NLP and other AI technologies. She has deep expertise in environmental, social and corporate governance (ESG) content, and played a leading role in adapting the SASB framework for news to create the SASB Lens, which captures the relevance of each SASB category to a company as it unfolds over time. As an engineer she has contributed to all the backend and testing infrastructure for this data product. This includes ETL pipelines for processing in batches and live streams, managing taxonomy of ESG issues, internal apps for collecting labels and running tests, and text analysis modules with NLP and ML techniques.
She has a BS in Electrical Engineering from MIT, and was initially interested in the technical challenges to clean energy. Finding that it’s difficult to achieve the level of cooperation needed to systematically address climate change, she pursued a joint master’s degree at UC Berkeley at the Goldman School for Public Policy and the Energy and Resources Group. There, she gained subject matter expertise about CSR, GHG emissions accounting, economics, and finance. These days she’s mostly gaining more skills in NLP engineering and machine learning. She strives to keep on top of the latest ESG research methods with a particular interest in barriers to ESG integration in financial products.
